Gavin Yeung is the co-founder of Kinsman and an established lifestyle senior editor of Tatler Hongkong. What began as a hobby eventually led Yeung to helm the bar in hotly anticipated guest shifts at respected venues like The Aubrey at Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, Dr. Fern’s Gin Parlour, Dio Store and Woo Cheong Tea House—all the while, he has searched for the answer to that original question. He takes in the direction and mixology of Kinsman – a Cantonese cocktail salon that champions the forgotten tradition of indigenous Cantonese spirits.



Spirits-making has a long history in Hong Kong and Canton, but is seen today as a relic of a faded era. Kinsman’s opening cocktail programme seeks to bring modern-day drinkers a taste of Hong Kong’s former glory as a major hub for spirits distilling, in the process paying homage to an important but forgotten period in the city’s history. Defined as a relative by birth, Kinsman takes its name from the family-run nature of many of the original distilleries in Hong Kong, with the sons of each generation taking over the family business and passing the secret formulas of the spirits and liqueurs down to their own descendants. Kinsman also refers to the bonds we share with those we drink with—relationships formed over great cocktails can be as solid as those of your own blood.
